There are few things as important to a
restful night's sleep as the right type of mattress,
sheets, and
a wonderful bed pillow.
A great bed pillow can make even a poor mattress tolerable,
while a terrible pillow can make even an excellent mattress
feel inadequate.
Experts recommend replacing foam and
synthetic pillows every one to two years,
and a down filled pillow every five
to ten years.
Consider purchasing new pillows for comfort if:
· Your down pillow is over five years old
· Your synthetic pillow is more than a year old
· You can't find a comfortable position on it.
· You wake up feeling stiff..
· or with "knots" in your shoulders or neck
· Your current pillow feels lifeless..
· or is lumpy, flat, or simply out of shape.
Standard size pillows are 20" x 26".
This size is easy to find and fits well on all sizes of beds.
Use one for a twin bed, two for a double or queen bed, and three for a king bed.
Pillowcases are also very easy to find for standard pillows.
Queen size bed pillows, at 20" x 30", are four inches longer than a standard pillow. Queen size pillowcases are
more difficult to find, so most people tend to use a standard size pillowcase instead.
King size bed pillows are the longest, measuring 20" x 36".
Two king pillows will fit on either a California or an Eastern King bed.
Pillowcases are plentiful for king pillows. Some people enjoy having a long king pillow
for comfort all to themselves, while others find this size a bit unwieldy and may prefer a standard pillow instead. You'll need three standard pillows to fit across a king bed.
Down is the most luxurious comfortable bed pillow filling available.
It is very soft and light, and has a cozy feel.
Goose down is the finest down available, with duck down a close second.
The quality of down fill is rated for "fill power" using a numbering system.
Down pillows rated at more than 500 fill power would be more expensive, longer lasting, and of higher quality than those rated with lower numbers.
Down pillows can be very helpful for sleepers who like to arrange their
bed pillows "just so" since the soft fillings make it easy to adjust to your liking. They're available in soft, medium, and firm styles.
What To Look For When Choosing a Quality Down Pillow
· A long term manufacturer's warranty
· High thread count in the bed pillow's fabric cover
· Quality of the down (pure down vs. down & feather mix)
· Higher "fill power" ratings
Feathers are the other natural filler for bed pillows.
They can be heavier than down and are also a bit firmer in feel. Feathers are sometimes used in a firm inner "core" inside down
bed pillows. They are also often mixed into "down and feather" pillows which are less expensive than more desirable 100% down.
Synthetic bed pillows are most often filled with polyester. They are fluffy and generally a bit firm, and can be less adaptable if you like to push in the corners of your pillow to make sleeping more comfortable.
Like foam, many synthetics can provide good support.
Some synthetic fillings are also made to resemble down.
Look for these
if you love the feel of down but need a less expensive alternative or
prefer the synthetic fibers.
